International Literacy Day / Word Spotter Scavenger Hunt
Word Spotter Scavenger Hunt
Children explore the service and yard hunting for words on signs, labels and posters, ticking off letters, sounds or word types on a checklist.
How to run it
- Create two checklists: one with letters and pictures for younger children, and one with word challenges for older children, such as a word with five letters or a word with 'ing'.
- Agree on the safe areas children can search.
- Send children off in pairs to find and record words they spot on signs, labels, books and packaging.
- Come back together and share the trickiest or funniest words found.
You will need
- printed checklists
- clipboards
- pencils
Make it easier or harderYounger children hunt for the letters in their name; older children find words for each part of speech.
SafetyKeep children within agreed boundaries and in sight of an educator.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 4, Outcome 2Finding words in their surroundings shows children how literacy connects to their everyday world.
