Threatened Species Day / Wildlife Habitat Building
Wildlife Habitat Building
Children build a small habitat from sticks, leaves and natural materials for a threatened species, thinking about shelter, food and water.
How to run it
- Talk about what animals need: shelter, food, water and safety.
- Children collect fallen sticks, leaves, bark and stones from the yard.
- In small groups, build a mini habitat for a chosen threatened animal.
- Each group explains how their habitat meets the animal's needs.
You will need
- fallen sticks
- leaves and bark
- stones
- small water dish
Make it easier or harderYounger children can build a cubby for a toy animal; older children can research their animal's real habitat first.
SafetyCollect only fallen materials, check for insects and spiders, and wash hands afterwards.
