Refugee Week / Welcome Pack for New Kids
Welcome Pack for New Kids
Children design a welcome pack for children who are new to the service, with a picture map, picture cards for everyday needs and a friendly note.
How to run it
- Explain that Refugee Week celebrates people who have found a new home in Australia, and that anyone starting somewhere new feels better when they are welcomed.
- Brainstorm what a new child needs to know: where the toilets, water, bags and play areas are, and who to ask for help.
- In small groups, children draw a picture map of the service, make simple picture cards, and write or draw a welcome note.
- Put the pieces in a decorated folder and keep packs at the front desk to give to new families.
You will need
- A4 card
- folders or large envelopes
- markers and coloured pencils
- glue sticks
Make it easier or harderYounger children draw the picture cards; older children draw the map to scale and add 'hello' in languages used by local families.
