Challenge Day / Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower
Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower
Teams race the clock to build the tallest freestanding tower from dry spaghetti and marshmallows, testing engineering ideas.
How to run it
- Give each team the same number of spaghetti sticks and marshmallows.
- Set a time limit, such as 15 minutes.
- Teams plan and build the tallest tower that stands on its own.
- Measure each tower and discuss which shapes were strongest.
You will need
- dry spaghetti
- marshmallows
- timer
- measuring tape
Make it easier or harderGive younger children more time and materials; older children can add a weight-bearing test.
SafetyRemind children not to eat used marshmallows; check for gelatine and dietary needs.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 4, Outcome 2Collaborative engineering builds problem-solving and teamwork.
