International Mother Language Day / Songs From Home Circle
Songs From Home Circle
Children and invited family members share a short song, rhyme or lullaby in a home language, and the group learns a line or an action to join in.
How to run it
- A week ahead, invite families to share a song, rhyme or lullaby in person or as a recording, recognising that not everyone will want to.
- Sit in a circle and introduce each song with the language name and where it is spoken.
- Listen first, then learn one repeating line, clap pattern or action together.
- Finish by thanking each sharer in their language, and write the song titles on a 'Songs of Our Room' poster.
You will need
- device and speaker for recordings
- poster paper
- markers
Make it easier or harderYounger children join in with actions only; older children can teach the line and explain what it means.
