Africa Day / Rhythms Across Africa Drum Circle
Rhythms Across Africa Drum Circle
Children listen to music from different countries, such as djembe drumming from Mali and Guinea, mbira from Zimbabwe and kora from Senegal, then create their own call-and-response rhythms.
How to run it
- Play short recordings of djembe drumming from West Africa, mbira (thumb piano) from Zimbabwe and kora (harp-lute) from Senegal, Mali or The Gambia, showing each country on a map.
- Hand out bucket drums, upturned tubs or boxes and practise a simple steady beat together.
- Teach call-and-response: the leader plays a short rhythm and the group echoes it.
- Let children take turns as leader, and if possible invite a local African music group or family member to play (offer payment for their time).
You will need
- upturned buckets, tubs or boxes
- music player and recordings
- map of Africa
- shakers (optional)
Make it easier or harderYounger children can echo very short patterns; older children can layer two rhythms at once.
SafetyKeep volume comfortable and provide a quiet space for children sensitive to noise.
