Earth Hour / Pizza Box Solar Oven
Pizza Box Solar Oven
Children build a solar oven from a pizza box, foil and plastic wrap, then use only the sun's energy to melt chocolate on biscuits, no electricity needed.
How to run it
- Cut a flap in the lid of a pizza box, leaving one side attached, and line it with foil.
- Line the inside base with black paper and cover the opening with plastic wrap to trap heat.
- Place biscuits topped with chocolate pieces inside.
- Prop the flap with a stick to reflect sun into the box and leave it in full sun for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Check the results and talk about how solar power is used to make electricity.
You will need
- pizza boxes
- aluminium foil
- black paper
- plastic wrap
- tape
- sticks or skewers
- plain biscuits
- chocolate pieces
- thermometer (optional)
Make it easier or harderYounger children can decorate pre-built ovens; older children can test different angles and record temperatures.
SafetyCheck allergies, educators do the cutting, and use oven mitts as foil and treats can get hot.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 4, Outcome 2Children test how the sun's energy can be harnessed and link it to cleaner energy choices.
