World Environment Day / Habitat Hustle Tag
Habitat Hustle Tag
A fast outdoor game where children are possums racing to collect food, water and shelter tokens while taggers play habitat threats and shelter hoops disappear each round.
How to run it
- Scatter hoops as shelter and place piles of coloured tokens for food and water at the edges of the space.
- Explain that each possum must collect one food and one water token, then reach a hoop to survive the round.
- Choose two or three taggers to be threats such as land clearing, cars or feral cats.
- After each round, remove a hoop and let tagged players become threats or new animals.
- Finish by discussing what happened when shelter was lost and how habitat can be protected.
You will need
- hoops
- coloured tokens, pegs or bean bags
- cones
Make it easier or harderYounger children can play without taggers and focus on collecting; older children can add rules for drought or bushfire rounds.
SafetyMark clear boundaries away from fences and play on grass where possible.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 3, Outcome 2Children stay active while learning how habitat loss affects wildlife and their wider world.
