Greek Day / Greek Circle Dance

Greek Circle Dance

Children learn a simple Greek line dance, holding hands in an open circle behind a leader, as danced at Greek celebrations, weddings and festivals in Australia.

How to run it

  1. Invite a family member, local Greek community group or dance school to teach, if possible.
  2. Explain that many Greek dances are danced in a line or open circle, with the leader at the front sometimes waving a handkerchief.
  3. Teach a simplified basic step: step right, step right, back, forward, in a slow count.
  4. Join hands at shoulder height and practise moving together slowly, then to Greek folk music.
  5. Take turns being the leader at the front of the line.

You will need

  • Greek folk music
  • speaker
  • handkerchief or scarf for the leader
Make it easier or harderYounger children can simply walk in step behind the leader; older children can learn a longer step pattern.
SafetyKeep the line slow and let children hold hands gently or link arms only if comfortable.
