International Literacy Day / Giant Letter Hop and Spell
Giant Letter Hop and Spell
Children toss a beanbag onto a giant chalk letter grid in the yard, then hop from letter to letter to spell words.
How to run it
- Draw a large grid of letters in chalk on concrete, including plenty of vowels.
- Have a child toss a beanbag onto the grid to choose their starting letter.
- The child hops from letter to letter to spell a word that starts with that letter, saying each letter out loud.
- Keep score of letters used or set team challenges, such as the longest word.
You will need
- chalk
- beanbags
Make it easier or harderYounger children hop to the letters of their name or simple three-letter words; older children spell words from a theme list.
SafetyCheck the concrete is dry and clear, and space out waiting children.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 3, Outcome 4Combining movement with spelling supports physical wellbeing and confident learning.
