All About Australia Day / Relaxed Backyard Cricket
Relaxed Backyard Cricket
A casual, inclusive game of cricket with friendly rules so everyone gets a bat, a bowl and a laugh.
How to run it
- Set up stumps and mark a bowling line with a cone.
- Agree on simple rules, such as everyone batting for six balls.
- Rotate batters, bowlers and fielders regularly.
- Use a soft ball and underarm bowling for beginners.
- Celebrate good catches and sportsmanship, not just runs.
You will need
- cricket bat
- soft or tennis ball
- stumps or a bin
- cones
Make it easier or harderUse a larger bat and stationary ball for younger players; older children can keep score and try overarm bowling.
SafetyUse a soft ball, keep waiting players well behind the batter and follow sun safety.
