International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples / Everyone Has Rights Poster
Everyone Has Rights Poster
Children design posters about Indigenous peoples' rights to their languages, cultures and lands, inspired by the United Nations declaration on these rights.
How to run it
- Explain that in 2007 the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Australia endorsed it in 2009.
- Share a few rights in child-friendly words, such as the right to speak your own language, keep your culture and care for your land.
- Children pick one right and design a poster with a slogan and pictures, using their own designs rather than copying cultural artworks.
- Display the posters together as a gallery wall.
You will need
- A3 paper
- markers and crayons
- child-friendly list of rights
Make it easier or harderYounger children colour a slogan prepared by an educator; older children write a short explanation of their chosen right.
