International Mother Language Day / Counting Hopscotch in Many Languages
Counting Hopscotch in Many Languages
A chalk hopscotch course where each round is counted aloud in a different language, led by children and families who speak it.
How to run it
- Chalk a hopscotch grid numbered 1 to 10 in a shaded outdoor area.
- Ask children if they can count to ten in a home language and invite them to lead a round.
- Play hopscotch with everyone counting each square aloud in that round's language.
- Rotate languages every few turns and keep a tally on the wall of languages counted today.
You will need
- chalk
- beanbags or flat stones
- language counting cards (optional)
Make it easier or harderYounger children count to five; older children try counting backwards or skip counting in the new language.
SafetyCheck the surface for trip hazards and keep the grid in shade on hot days.
