Science Week / Coin Battery LED
Coin Battery LED
Older children stack coins, foil and vinegar-soaked card to build a simple battery that can light a small LED.
How to run it
- Cut small squares of card and soak them in vinegar.
- Stack a coin, a square of foil and a soaked card square, then repeat four or five times.
- Touch the LED legs to the top and bottom of the stack.
- Flip the LED if it does not light and talk about how the stack makes electricity.
You will need
- copper-coloured coins
- aluminium foil
- card
- vinegar
- small LEDs
- paper towel
Make it easier or harderPre-cut the materials for younger children, or have older children test how many layers make it brighter.
SafetyLEDs and coins are choking hazards, so supervise closely and wash hands after.
