World Turtle Day / Turtle Migration Map
Turtle Migration Map
Children plot the long journeys sea turtles make between Australian nesting beaches and feeding grounds on a big map, measuring distances and imagining the trip.
How to run it
- Draw or print a large map of Australia and nearby oceans and countries.
- Share simple facts about turtles that nest on Queensland and Western Australian beaches and feed far away.
- Have groups mark nesting beaches and feeding grounds with stickers, then join them with string or yarn.
- Use the map scale to estimate how far each turtle travelled.
- Ask children to write a postcard from a turtle about its journey.
You will need
- large map
- stickers
- yarn or string
- rulers
- blank postcards
- pencils
Make it easier or harderFor younger children, trace one journey together and draw the turtle's postcard; older children can compare several species' routes.
