National Tree Day / Tree Measuring Investigation
Tree Measuring Investigation
Children measure the girth of trees and estimate height using simple methods, recording and comparing their results.
How to run it
- Measure around the trunk at chest height with a tape measure.
- Estimate height by bending over and looking through legs until the top of the tree shows.
- Measure the distance from that spot to the tree.
- Record and compare results.
You will need
- tape measures
- clipboards
- pencils
- recording sheets
Make it easier or harderMeasure girth only for a simpler task; older children can calculate tree age or diameter.
SafetyStay away from roads and check for hazards near trees.
