International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples / Traditional Indigenous Games Session
Traditional Indigenous Games Session
Children play traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games taken from the Australian Sports Commission's Yulunga traditional Indigenous games resource, learning where each game comes from.
How to run it
- Download the Yulunga traditional Indigenous games resource from the Australian Sports Commission website.
- Choose two or three games suited to your space and age group, and read the instructions and background for each.
- Before each game, share which community or region it comes from, as described in the resource.
- Play following the resource's rules, then ask children what skills each game needed.
You will need
- printed game instructions from the resource
- equipment listed for chosen games, such as balls, cones or beanbags
Make it easier or harderYounger children play the simplest version with fewer rules; older children teach a game to a younger group.
SafetyFollow the resource's instructions exactly rather than inventing versions, check the area for hazards and plan water breaks.
