Science Week / Surface Tension Coin Drops
Surface Tension Coin Drops
Children predict and count how many water drops fit on a coin before it spills, discovering how water holds together.
How to run it
- Give each pair a coin, a cup of water and a dropper on a tray.
- Ask children to guess how many drops will fit.
- Add drops one at a time and count until it spills.
- Compare results and try again with a drop of soap in the water.
You will need
- coins
- droppers or pipettes
- cups of water
- trays
- dish soap
Make it easier or harderUse a large coin for younger children, or have older children graph results for different coins.
SafetyCoins are a choking hazard for children who mouth objects.
