All About Australia Day / Shared Plate Culture Picnic
Shared Plate Culture Picnic
Children help prepare a few simple dishes from cultures in their families and community, then share them on a picnic rug together.
How to run it
- Ask families for simple favourite recipes from their culture, or choose a few yourself.
- Pick three or four that are quick and safe for children to help make, like dumplings, flatbread or fruit salad.
- Children prepare the dishes in small groups with an educator.
- Lay out a picnic and have each group introduce their dish and where it comes from.
- Collect the recipes into a service cookbook for families.
You will need
- ingredients for chosen recipes
- bowls and utensils
- picnic rugs
- paper for recipe cards
Make it easier or harderYounger children can wash, stir and assemble; older children can follow a recipe card and plan quantities.
