Down on the Farm / Shake-Your-Own Butter
Shake-Your-Own Butter
Children take turns shaking cream in jars until it turns into butter, then taste it on crackers and talk about where food comes from.
How to run it
- Pour cold cream into clean jars, filling each about a third full, and seal tightly.
- Pass jars around the circle and take turns shaking hard.
- Watch the cream turn to whipped cream, then a lump of butter and buttermilk.
- Pour off the buttermilk and spread the butter on crackers to taste.
You will need
- thickened cream
- clean jars with lids
- crackers
- butter knives
Make it easier or harderUse small jars for younger arms; older children can time how long each stage takes.
SafetyCheck for dairy allergies, use plastic jars where possible and follow food hygiene practices.
