World Food Day / Regrow Kitchen Scraps
Regrow Kitchen Scraps
Children rescue vegetable scraps like spring onion roots and celery bases, set them in water and watch new growth over the following days.
How to run it
- Talk about how much food gets thrown away and how scraps can still be useful.
- Give each child a scrap such as a spring onion root end, celery base or lettuce stump.
- Stand each scrap in a shallow cup of water on a sunny windowsill.
- Children draw and measure their scrap each day and change the water every second day.
- Plant the strongest regrowers in the garden or pots after a week.
You will need
- spring onion, celery or lettuce bases
- clear cups or jars
- water
- rulers
- observation sheets
Make it easier or harderYounger children can draw their scrap each day; older children can measure growth and graph it over the week.
SafetyScraps are for growing, not eating; have children wash hands after handling them and change the water often to avoid mould.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 2, Outcome 4Children observe change over time and take small actions to reduce food waste.
