Nowruz / Persian Tile Mosaic Art
Persian Tile Mosaic Art
Children create symmetrical mosaic designs from paper squares inspired by the blue and turquoise tiles of Persian buildings, a calm art activity full of pattern and colour.
How to run it
- Show photos of tiled buildings and gardens from Iran and nearby countries, pointing out stars, flowers and repeating patterns in blues, turquoise, white and yellow.
- Have children fold a square of paper into quarters to make guidelines for a symmetrical design.
- Glue small paper squares and shapes to build the pattern outwards from the centre, matching each quarter.
- Join everyone's tiles together on a wall to make one large mosaic panel.
You will need
- square card bases
- coloured paper in blues, turquoise, white and yellow
- scissors or pre-cut paper squares
- glue sticks
- photos of Persian tile work
Make it easier or harderProvide pre-cut squares and a simple flower outline for younger children; older children can design eight-point star patterns.
SafetySupervise scissors.
