World Oceans Day / Ocean Layers Density Jar
Ocean Layers Density Jar
Children pour liquids of different densities into a jar to create layers like the zones of the ocean.
How to run it
- Talk about the different layers of the ocean, from sunlit to deep.
- Colour water blue and set out honey, dishwashing liquid and oil.
- Pour slowly in order: honey, dishwashing liquid, water, then oil.
- Label each layer with an ocean zone and discuss why they don't mix.
You will need
- clear plastic jars
- honey
- dishwashing liquid
- water
- food colouring
- vegetable oil
- labels
Make it easier or harderYounger children can pour two layers; older children can add extra liquids and predict their order.
SafetyUse plastic jars and don't drink the mixture; clean spills quickly.
