Slime Lab Day / Magnetic Slime Demo
Magnetic Slime Demo
An educator mixes iron oxide powder into slime and children watch it creep towards a strong magnet, sparking big questions about magnetism.
How to run it
- Before the session, the educator mixes iron oxide powder into a small batch of slime while wearing gloves.
- Place the slime on a tray in front of the group.
- Hold a strong magnet nearby and let children watch the slime stretch and wrap around it.
- Ask children to predict and explain what is happening.
You will need
- iron oxide powder
- prepared PVA slime
- strong neodymium magnet
- gloves
- tray
Make it easier or harderSimplify for younger children by testing everyday magnetic objects, or have older children test the magnet's range.
SafetyEducator-only demo with gloves; strong magnets and iron oxide are kept out of children's reach as magnets are dangerous if swallowed.
