Halloween / Lolly Colour Chromatography
Lolly Colour Chromatography
Children separate the hidden dyes in coloured lollies using filter paper and water, discovering the colours inside.
How to run it
- Place a coloured lolly on a few drops of water to dissolve the coating.
- Dab the coloured water near the bottom of a filter paper strip.
- Stand the strip in a cup with a little water below the dot.
- Watch the colours separate as the water rises and compare results.
You will need
- coloured lollies
- coffee filter papers
- cups
- water
- pencils
Make it easier or harderYounger children can compare two colours; older children can test markers too and record results.
SafetyLollies used for the experiment should not be eaten; supervise younger children with small lollies as they are a choking hazard.
