All About Australia Day / Local Elder Visit: Bush Foods

Local Elder Visit: Bush Foods

A local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community member visits to share stories of Country and the bush foods that grow in your area, in their own words.

How to run it

  1. Contact your local Aboriginal land council, Aboriginal corporation or school's First Nations education officer well ahead of time.
  2. Ask what the visitor would like to share and how they would like the children to take part, and agree a fee: this is professional cultural knowledge.
  3. Prepare children beforehand: whose Country you are on, and how to listen and ask respectful questions.
  4. Let the visitor lead the session, including any tasting, and follow their guidance on what can be photographed or shared.
  5. Afterwards, have children draw or write one thing they learnt and send thank-you cards.

You will need

  • morning tea for your guest
  • thank-you cards
  • paper and pencils
Make it easier or harderYounger children can focus on one food and a drawing; older children can prepare questions in advance and write a short reflection.
SafetyCheck food allergies with your guest before any tasting, and follow your service's visitor and child safe procedures.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 2, Outcome 1Children build respect for First Nations peoples and their connection to Country by learning directly from a community member.
