St Patrick's Day / Irish Soda Bread Rolls
Irish Soda Bread Rolls
Children mix and shape small soda bread rolls, a quick Irish bread that rises with bicarb soda instead of yeast, and cut a cross on top before baking.
How to run it
- Explain that soda bread is a traditional Irish bread raised with bicarb soda and buttermilk, so it needs no time to rise.
- Children mix flour, bicarb soda and salt, then stir in buttermilk to make a soft dough.
- Shape small rolls and cut a cross on top with a blunt knife.
- Bake on a lined tray at 200°C for 20 to 25 minutes, until they sound hollow when tapped.
- Cool slightly and serve with butter.
