Nature Play Day / Homemade Natural Paints
Homemade Natural Paints
Children make paints from kitchen ingredients like turmeric, beetroot and herbs, then test the colours on paper.
How to run it
- Put small amounts of turmeric, grated beetroot and crushed herbs into separate cups.
- Add a little water and stir to release the colour.
- Strain if needed and test each paint on paper.
- Compare colours and talk about natural dyes.
You will need
- turmeric
- beetroot
- herbs such as spinach or parsley
- water
- cups
- brushes
- paper
Make it easier or harderPrepare the ingredients for younger children; older children can test how lemon juice or bicarb changes the colours.
SafetyEducators grate the beetroot; turmeric stains, so cover tables and wear aprons.
