Refugee Week / Friendly Football Welcome Cup
Friendly Football Welcome Cup
A mixed-team soccer cup where teams are shuffled every game and each goal is celebrated by shouting 'welcome' in a new language.
How to run it
- Explain that football is played all around the world and is a common way new arrivals make friends in Australia.
- Set up small-sided pitches with cones and form mixed teams of ages and abilities.
- Play short games, shuffling teams after each one so everyone plays with new people.
- When a goal is scored, the whole field calls out 'welcome' in a language from the banner or language list.
You will need
- soft soccer balls
- cones
- bibs
- list of 'welcome' translations
Make it easier or harderYounger children play with a larger ball and no goalkeepers; older children referee and award a fair-play prize.
SafetyUse soft balls, check the area for hazards, and plan water and shade breaks.
