World Animal Day / Fleece Tug Toys for Shelters
Fleece Tug Toys for Shelters
Children braid strips of old fleece into sturdy dog tug toys to donate to a local animal shelter, learning how small acts of kindness help animals waiting for homes.
How to run it
- Contact a local animal shelter first to check they accept handmade toys and any rules they have.
- Cut old fleece or clean cotton T-shirts into long strips about three centimetres wide.
- Show children how to knot three strips together and braid them tightly.
- Tie a firm knot at the end and trim any loose threads.
- Bundle the toys with a group card and arrange delivery to the shelter.
You will need
- old fleece blankets or cotton T-shirts
- scissors
- card for a group note
Make it easier or harderYounger children can braid with a partner holding the knot; older children can try four-strand or square-knot designs.
SafetySupervise scissor use and only donate toys the shelter has agreed to accept.
