Volcano Day / Fizzing Volcano Eruption
Fizzing Volcano Eruption
Children mix bicarb soda and vinegar inside a model volcano to create a foaming eruption and talk about the reaction that causes it.
How to run it
- Set a bottle inside a mound of sand, playdough or a pre-made volcano on a tray outside.
- Add two spoons of bicarb soda, a squirt of dishwashing liquid and red food colouring to the bottle.
- Children pour in vinegar and step back to watch it erupt.
- Talk about the gas made when the two ingredients mix, then try different amounts.
You will need
- bicarb soda
- white vinegar
- red food colouring
- dishwashing liquid
- plastic bottle
- tray
Make it easier or harderYounger children can pour and watch; older children can measure amounts and record which mix erupts highest.
SafetyVinegar stings eyes, so keep faces back from the bottle and have water ready for rinsing.
