New Year's Party / Fizzing Soda Fountains
Fizzing Soda Fountains
Children drop mint lollies into bottles of soft drink and watch foamy fountains erupt, then compare which drinks fizz highest. A loud, splashy way to ring in the new year.
How to run it
- Set up bottles on flat ground well away from buildings.
- Ask children to predict which drink will spray highest.
- Roll a paper tube of mints and drop them in all at once, then step back quickly.
- Measure or compare the heights and talk about how gas bubbles form.
You will need
- 1.25 L bottles of soft drink
- mint lollies
- paper for a tube
- tape measure
- safety glasses
Make it easier or harderYounger children can watch and count down while older children change one variable and record results.
SafetyEducators drop the mints while children stand at least two metres back wearing safety glasses; do not let anyone drink the used soft drink.
