Matariki / Find Your Star Cluster
Find Your Star Cluster
A fast outdoor grouping game where children are stars scattered across the sky who race to find their cluster when the call goes out, with a quick fact shared each round.
How to run it
- Give each child a star card showing one of the nine Matariki star names, making sure several children share each name.
- Have everyone jog, skip or twinkle around the space as stars across the night sky.
- Call out a challenge such as 'Find everyone with your star' or 'Make a cluster of nine with one of each star'.
- When groups are formed, share one quick fact about a star before swapping cards and playing again.
You will need
- star name cards (nine names, several of each)
- cones to mark the space
Make it easier or harderUse colours instead of names for younger children; for older children call out the star's meaning instead of its name.
SafetySet clear boundaries and remind children to watch for others when moving to their group.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 3, Outcome 2Children build fitness and cooperation while repeating the names and meanings of the Matariki stars.
