World Environment Day / Bushland Food Web Game
Bushland Food Web Game
Seated in a circle, children each become an Australian plant or animal and pass a ball of yarn to show who eats whom, then see the whole web sag when one species disappears.
How to run it
- Give each child a card naming a bushland living thing, such as gum tree, grass, beetle, possum, kookaburra, snake or fungi.
- Start with the sun or a plant and pass the yarn to something that depends on it, holding the strand tight.
- Keep passing until everyone is linked, explaining each connection out loud.
- Name a threat such as land clearing and have one child drop their strand.
- Ask everyone who felt a tug to raise a hand and talk about how one loss affects many.
You will need
- ball of yarn
- name cards for plants and animals
Make it easier or harderYounger children can use picture cards and a smaller web; older children can add decomposers and research one link each.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 2, Outcome 5Children explain links between living things and see how their choices connect to a wider world.
