International Literacy Day / Big and Little Reading Buddies
Big and Little Reading Buddies
Older children pair up with younger ones to share picture books, then talk together about why being able to read matters and that many people worldwide are still learning.
How to run it
- Briefly explain that International Literacy Day is about everyone having the chance to learn to read and write.
- Pair each older child with a younger child and let them choose a book together.
- Have the older buddy read aloud, pausing to ask questions about the pictures.
- Finish with a group chat about what reading lets us do every day.
You will need
- picture books
- cushions or mats
Make it easier or harderYounger buddies can 'read' the pictures back to their partner; older buddies prepare questions to ask before they start.
