World Turtle Day / Turtle Diet Tong Relay

Turtle Diet Tong Relay

Teams use tongs to feed their turtle the right food, such as seagrass for green turtles or shellfish for loggerheads, while avoiding plastic look-alikes that turtles can mistake for food.

How to run it

  1. Fill a tub with green paper seagrass, shell pictures, clear jellyfish cut from bubble wrap and plastic bags.
  2. Give each team a turtle card showing what its species eats.
  3. One at a time, players run to the tub, pick one correct food item with tongs and run it back to their team's turtle.
  4. Any plastic picked up must be returned and costs a turn.
  5. Discuss how turtles can mistake floating plastic bags for jellyfish.
