Woodwork Day / Simple Woodwork Projects
Simple Woodwork Projects
Older children use hammers, nails and glue to make simple wooden projects such as a boat or name plaque, then paint them.
How to run it
- Set up a woodwork area with soft timber offcuts, child-sized hammers and short nails.
- Teach safe hammer use: hold the nail with pliers or a peg, tap gently and keep fingers clear.
- Children plan and build a simple project, gluing or nailing pieces together.
- Once complete, paint and decorate.
You will need
- soft timber offcuts
- child-sized hammers
- short flat-head nails
- pliers or pegs
- wood glue
- paint
- safety glasses
Make it easier or harderUse glue-only projects for less confident children; older children can design from a plan.
SafetyClose supervision with low ratios; safety glasses, closed shoes, sanded timber with no splinters, and a set tool area.
