World Poetry Day / Shape Poem Pictures
Shape Poem Pictures
Children write poems where the words themselves form the shape of the subject, such as a poem about a wave written in a curling wave shape.
How to run it
- Show a few examples of shape poems and talk about how the layout adds to the meaning.
- Have each child choose a simple subject and lightly draw its outline in pencil.
- Ask them to brainstorm describing words, then write their poem along or inside the outline.
- Rub out the pencil outline and add colour to finish.
You will need
- paper
- pencils
- erasers
- coloured fine-tip markers
Make it easier or harderYounger children write single describing words around a printed outline; older children write full sentences in a spiral or complex shape.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 4, Outcome 1Combining words and art in a shape poem builds creativity and lets children express their own ideas.
