International Dance Day / Shadow Dance Screen
Shadow Dance Screen
Children dance behind a backlit sheet so the audience sees giant moving silhouettes, playing with size, shape and stretch.
How to run it
- Hang a white sheet across a doorway or between two chairs and shine a lamp or projector from behind.
- Darken the room and let children experiment with moving closer to and further from the light.
- In small groups, children create a short shadow dance to music.
- Perform for the audience and talk about how the shadows changed with their movements.
You will need
- white sheet
- lamp or projector
- pegs or clamps
- device and speaker
Make it easier or harderYounger children can copy an educator's shadow moves; older children can tell a story through their shadow dance.
SafetyKeep cords taped down, the lamp out of reach and the space clear for dancers.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 1, Outcome 5Children build confidence and creativity, using movement to communicate ideas to an audience.
