Mabo Day / Seed Planting for Mabo Day
Seed Planting for Mabo Day
Children plant seeds in pots or a garden bed while learning that gardens and family land on Mer were part of the evidence in the Mabo case.
How to run it
- Explain that Meriam families have long tended gardens on Mer, and that knowledge of who looked after which land helped show the court their ownership.
- Prepare pots or a garden bed with potting mix.
- Children plant quick-growing seeds such as beans or sunflowers and add a label with their name and the date, 3 June.
- Water the seeds and set up a roster so children care for the plants over the coming weeks.
