Matariki / Make and Swing Poi

Make and Swing Poi

Children make soft poi from stockings and wool, then learn simple swings to music, discovering a Māori performance art that builds rhythm, coordination and focus.

How to run it

  1. Explain that poi are balls on cords used in Māori performance, and if possible invite a local kapa haka group or Māori community member to demonstrate (offer payment for their time).
  2. Have each child stuff a ball of scrunched plastic bags or wool into the toe of a stocking, then tie it off tightly.
  3. Plait or tie a cord of wool to the ball, about the length from the child's fingertips to elbow, with a loop or knot to hold.
  4. Practise simple forward and backward swings on each side, then try tapping the poi on a palm in time with a steady beat.

You will need

  • old stockings or socks
  • plastic bags or wool for stuffing
  • thick wool
  • scissors
  • music player
Make it easier or harderYounger children can use short cords and simple swings; older children can create a short sequence in pairs.
SafetySpace children well apart while swinging and use only soft fillings.
My Time Our Place · Outcome 4, Outcome 5Children persist with a new physical skill and learn about Māori performance as a living art form.
