Mabo Day / Listening to Torres Strait Voices
Listening to Torres Strait Voices
Children watch a short official video about Mabo Day or hear from a Torres Strait Islander guest, then share one thing they learned on a group 'we learned' wall.
How to run it
- Choose a short, age-appropriate video from an official source such as AIATSIS, the National Museum of Australia or Reconciliation Australia, and preview it first.
- Where possible, contact a local Torres Strait Islander organisation or community member to speak with the children, and offer payment for their time.
- Watch or listen together, then invite children to ask respectful questions.
- Each child writes or draws one thing they learned on a sticky note for the 'we learned' wall.
You will need
- projector or screen
- sticky notes
- pencils
- poster paper
Make it easier or harderYounger children draw one picture; older children prepare questions in advance.
SafetyPreview all videos, as some First Nations material may include images or voices of people who have died; follow any warnings given.
