Remembrance Day / Letters From the Past
Letters From the Past
Older children imagine life during wartime and write a letter as if from a person of that time, building empathy and historical understanding.
How to run it
- Share a few age-appropriate facts or photos about life during wartime.
- Help children choose who they are writing as, such as a soldier, nurse or child at home.
- Let children write their letter, then age the paper with a tea wash if you like.
- Invite volunteers to read their letters aloud.
You will need
- paper
- pencils and pens
- cold tea and brushes (optional)
- reference pictures
Make it easier or harderYounger children can write a postcard of three sentences, while older children write a reply letter too.
SafetyKeep the content gentle and be ready to support children with family connections to conflict.
