Matariki / Hākari Shared Kūmara Feast

Hākari Shared Kūmara Feast

Children prepare roasted kūmara wedges and winter vegetables for a shared meal, reflecting the Matariki tradition of gathering to share food, remember and celebrate together.

How to run it

  1. Explain that Matariki has long been connected with the harvest being gathered and with sharing a feast, or hākari, with family and friends.
  2. Have children wash and scrub kūmara, carrots and pumpkin, then help an adult cut them into wedges.
  3. Toss vegetables in oil with a little salt and paprika, spread on trays and roast at 200°C for 30 to 40 minutes until tender.
  4. Set a shared table and invite each child to say one thing they are grateful for before eating together.
  5. Consider inviting local Māori community members or families who celebrate Matariki to share how they mark it.
