Hanukkah / Golden Latkes Cooking Session

Golden Latkes Cooking Session

Children grate potatoes and onion to make latkes, the crispy potato pancakes eaten at Hanukkah, learning why foods cooked in oil are part of the festival.

How to run it

  1. Share that foods cooked in oil are eaten at Hanukkah to remember the story of a small amount of oil that lasted eight days.
  2. Have children peel and grate potatoes and a little onion, then squeeze out the liquid in a clean tea towel.
  3. Mix with egg, a spoonful of flour and a pinch of salt, then shape into small flat patties.
  4. An adult shallow-fries the latkes until golden, or bakes them on an oiled tray at 220°C for about 25 minutes, turning once.
  5. Serve with apple sauce and sour cream or yoghurt, which are traditional toppings.
