International Chess Day / Chessboard Sandwich Squares
Chessboard Sandwich Squares
Children make a chessboard snack by arranging alternating squares of white and wholemeal sandwiches into an 8 by 8 grid.
How to run it
- Have children wash hands and make simple sandwiches with white and wholemeal bread.
- Cut sandwiches into small squares (educators may cut for younger children).
- Arrange the squares on a large tray in an alternating 8 by 8 pattern.
- Use cheese or vegetable pieces as 'pieces' before everyone shares the snack.
You will need
- white bread
- wholemeal bread
- spreads or fillings
- cheese cubes
- cherry tomatoes
- butter knives
- large tray
Make it easier or harderYounger children can arrange pre-cut squares; older children can cut and measure squares themselves.
SafetyCheck allergies (gluten, dairy), avoid nut-based spreads, cut cherry tomatoes in halves or quarters for younger children and supervise knife use.
